The art of the present is not only promoted by the commitment of private collectors but it is also focused in its tendencies. Besides the combination of economic investment and symbolic capital, the collection of art becomes the pinnacle of both a psychological and intellectual access to reality. The collector’s understanding of art as an aesthetic formulation of complex social processes goes far beyond current art discourses or image transfers. The intimacy created through art, the friendship with artists, the slowing down in the face of the transience of our present and the promise of artistic eternity open up a different space. The growing passion for collecting is characterized by the opening up of new terrain, the departure, the discovery as well as the exhilaration whenever artists in the collection achieve international success. But is it possible to measure an artist’s success by their presence in an important collection? What attraction does a well-grounded, receptive collection exert?
